Gartner's theory will no doubt raise
eyebrows— and hackles— among historians and psychologists,
not only because of turf wars, but because it asserts that
the driving force behind the American temperament could be
biological. Can you imagine fifth-grade social studies teachers
instructing their students that many of our Founding Fathers
had, well, psychological issues?
"It really is out of the box,
way out of the box," says Gartner. "And yet when
you start to examine the idea, it's like it was hiding in
plain sight. When you really start to think about it, it's
like, of course. Ah-ha."
